I’m so ticked!

I just wrote what was probably the most brilliant post I’ve ever written, all about how I’ve not a thought in my head and when I clicked “preview” it disappeared!

Arrgh!!

It was gone. Nothing left but the title — I’ve got nothing! — great title, huh?  I thought so too.

Now what? 

I can’t remember all the gems of wisdom that flew from my fingertips, so I guess I’ll just have to go with Plan B.

Connectivity

I have to go to a big HR conference for work in a couple of weeks and am trying to decide whether to finally spring for an iPad or lug around my 5 pound MACBook for 4 days. I’ve done that a few times and, let me tell you, it gets pretty heavy along about the middle of the second day.

So, if you have an iPad, please let me know what you like and dislike about it. The temptation to get one is getting to be almost overwhelming.

Then there’s the other little conference problem I have.

Shoes …

I’ve done a 4 day conference in heels and I’m never going to do that again. It was way back in 1994 but I still remember the agony my toes suffered all in the name of looking stylish and professional.

Anyway, choosing flats is a given but which flats? The ones I wear around the office everyday? They’re okay but I’ve actually worn them to a 4 day conference and, even though they’ve been resoled, I’m pretty sure about half way through the second day (I’m beginning to see a pattern here), my feet will hate me.

I just realized that I’ve had those shoes since 1997. I know this because I remember wearing them at a big conference in 1998 where I had to work the booth. They are the sweetest little pair of Antonio Melani loafers with the softest leather ever. They’re black so they go with everything. But, as much as I love them, they’re killers after a few hours of trekking through a convention.  So, what to do?

I know — Keds!

You can never go wrong with Keds.

All I have to do is get a pair of black slip on Keds and I’m all set. Then again, those hot pink skimmers are pretty nifty, too.

So, do you think a bunch of HR types would think me too terribly weird if I show up for the big conference in hot pink Keds?

Might be fun!

Definitely a conversation starter. I’m just guessing, though, that I probably wouldn’t be included in any of those conversations.  LOL!

  1. Keds are a must! I just got an iPad, and I love it except for the fact that I didn’t spring for the 3G or 4G network thing. I am completely reliant on Wi-Fi and that’s a bit limiting. At the Brookstone store at the airport (they seem to be in every airport), they have a faux leather portfolio for the iPad with a built in wireless keyboard that connects through Bluetooth. It’s a bit pricey ($100), but if you’re going to type a lot, it’s handy. This way you can have a “laptop” when you need it or just carry around your iPad. The iPad takes phenomenal pictures by the way.

    • Do you have a lot of difficulty finding wireless networks you can access? That’s one of my big concerns, though, I don’t really want the monthly 3G or 4G fee. Most of the places where I’ll use it have a wireless network I can tap into, for example, home, work, most hotels, etc.

      • Talk about irony, I was almost finished with my reply to this, and WP ate it! Seriously! Wi-Fi is available many places (Starbucks being number one), and it’s very easy to hook up to. However, not all Wi-Fi is created equal: some is free and unlimited, some free with a time limit, and some you have to pay for. I used it for the first time on my recent trip and there was no problem. You might be given a password to use (it pops up on your computer), but that’s about it. If you’re going to be at a conference, the facility should have Wi-Fi, but if not, there will be a coffee place nearby that does.

        • Oh no! Seriously? WP must be having issues this evening.
          I’ve used Wi-Fi with my MACBook and not had a problem so I figured I wouldn’t have on with an iPad either. Thanks for all the great help, though. Now I’m a big step closer to taking the plunge. 🙂

  2. This was such a funny post to me. I thought if Roseane Rosanna Danna posted, it would sound like this! hehe..Anyway, I just snagged the cutest ballet-looking slippers from DSW. They come in a small box in a pouch…cutest ever and very comfy and I’m not a flats wear-er coz eventually they hurt my feet…These do not! Ipad…I agree with the post above regarding being reliant on Wi-Fi, but I’ve found that whenever I’ve used my iPad in public, I’ve been able to access a wireless network. A keyboard is a plus if you’re typing notes. I love my iPad…it’s a definite “must have!!”

    • I have incredibly high arches so flats have always been really easy on my feet. I went on vacation a few years ago and wore the same pair of sandals all over Asheville, Charleston, and Savannah. My daughter about wore me out lugging around shopping bags for 5 days but, even walking on more concrete than I ever care to again, my feet were fine in those sandals. Maybe I should just wear them to the conference. LOL.

  4. Are you going to the SHRM conference in Atlanta? That’s awesome! Last time I went I wore cushioned sandals. All I remember is that they kept it so doggone cold my toes almost fell off. I have flat feet so I need support and Keds don’t do it for me but go with whatever is comfortable. The place gets so crowded no one will look at your feet! Buy the iPAD and get a new pair of shoes! Splurge!

    • Yep, work is sending me mostly to attend compensation sessions and a few on strategic management. I’ll have to write articles for our comp site so it will be a bunch of work. But, I don’t have to work the booth. The last big conference I went to was Book Expo in 1998 and I did have to work the booth there. It was exhausting. So, glad I’m off the hook on that this time.

  6. I say go with the sandals if you know they are comfy. There is nothing like sore feet.
    One of my sons has an iPad and takes it to uni, rather than lugging his Mac and says it’s great other than the onboard keyboard takes a bit of getting use to. For long documents the Mac is better. Have a great time.

  8. Ahhh, SHRM conferences…that brings back fond memories of my decade of HR days. Two tips for fetching lost text. If you use Firefox as your browser, this little add-on is handy as a pocket on a shirt: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/lazarus-form-recovery/ – it works like a charm. Secondly, maybe I’m a little slow but it took me a while to click the “kitchen sink” icon in my WP editor’s toolbar, but there is an undo feature hiding in there which is helpful when WordPress decides to snack on all or part of your post before you have a chance to save it as a draft.
