Calculating Range Spread

Helpful info if you work in HR. (And a shameless plug for my other blog, too.)

Determining the minimum and maximum when only the midpoint is known . . .

When using survey data to determine the salary range for a position, you could use the 10th 50th and 90th percentiles as your minimum, midpoint, and maximum for the range. One of the problems with doing that, though, is that those points tend to fluctuate with the survey data so that you never really know what your range spread is from position to position.

There is a simple method for determining the min, mid, and max of your salary range when only the midpoint of the survey data is known. First, you have to decide whether you want to use the 50th percentile as your midpoint or use the mean of the salary data for the demographic elements you’ve selected. For this example, let’s use the mean shown below.

Shedding light

It started a few months ago …

It began as a simple search for the perfect lamps for my bedroom. Not a hard thing to do. Just go to a couple of stores, check out their inventory, compare prices, pick one, and done.

Five stores later …

So, now I’m online and looking for a bargain on a great looking pair of lamps. But not just any old lamps will do. I’m pretty picky when it comes to lamps. Okay, I’m picky about a bunch of stuff.

Anyhoo, after wading through a gazillion websites, I narrow the field down to ceramic lamps with cylindrical shades. Easy, right?

Wrong. If i like the lamp, it costs too much. If it’s priced right then it’s not quite right or even just plain ugly.

The quest continues …

Just when I’m on the verge of throwing in the towel (but, don’t get me started on towels), I walk in to J. C. Penny and there it is. The lamp of my dreams. In two colors – ivory or the perfect green. On sale!

Guess how many they had in stock?

Yep, one is ivory and one is green and of course I need two the same color.

So, back to the Internet …

Found ’em. Bought ’em. Got ’em in three days. Not a chip or dent anywhere.

Who knew the JCP I grew up with, the store where my mom bought all our school clothes eons ago, has such nice stuff — and so reasonably priced, especially when on sale.

Perfect!

Full disclosure …

I realize this sounds like an ad for JCP but it isn’t. I do not work for or have any association with JCP other than as a customer. Though I love the lamps I found there, their store service could be improved. If they’d been on their toes, the store clerk would have at least offered to order them online for me.

Not so perfect.

Ninety-seven days later …

Time flies

I could say I’ve been really busy as the reason for why it’s been a while since my last post but the reality is that I’ve just not had a lot to say. I get focused in other directions and forget that I even have a blog. There’s my guilt confession. I forgot about you blog. Oops!

Catching up

A lot has happened in the last three months. I’m now, officially, a year older.

Read some good books by some of my favorite authors – Suzanne Kearsley, Harriet Evans, Beth Hoffman, Dorothea Benton Frank, and Mary Kay Andrews.

Movies this summer have been a disappointment, though. I guess the highlight for me was the new Star Trek pic, but not much else has given me a reason to spend a small fortune to sit in big dark room with too many other people just to be entertained. Even the thought of popcorn couldn’t entice me to see most of what’s in the theaters this summer.

Family matters

Ollie

Ollie

I’ve mentioned my house mates, Ollie and Emmy, in a few other blogs. You may remember that they’ve been with me since 2001. Though Emmy is doing fine, Ollie had cancer and, rather than prolong his suffering, I had him put down in June.

We miss him. Well, maybe Emmy doesn’t. He was pretty much a bully and made her life miserable. I think she is actually pretty happy now. She has the run of the house and has become quite playful again.

Winding up

I’ll try to not forget about you again blog. With a little luck, I’ll be able to squeeze a few posts in between studying for the next CCP module exam and whatever else I can find to do to avoid studying.

Okay. I admit it. I am just lazy.
